Camp Freedom

STJDA began offering summer camp experiences for children living with diabetes since its founding. Our residential and day camps are strategically placed across the Rio Grande Valley to provide more families access to a life-changing experience for their children living with diabetes, ages 7 to 14. Campers enjoy fun and educational activities, games, arts and crafts. Health care professionals are joined by educators and volunteers who are trained in diabetes care, all under the guidance of a pediatric endocrinologist.

Camp Freedom - Residential

about this camp

Camp Freedom - Residential is an overnight camp experience for Rio Grande Valley youth ages 7 to 14 who have diabetes. Our camp offers an authentic camp experience that many would never have the opportunity to have. Traditional camping can pose many obstacles when dealing with diabetes, but at Camp Freedom - Residential the campers enjoy camp activities in a safe environment.

Under the skilled supervision of trained camp counselors and medical staff, our campers enjoy walks, water games, arts and crafts, and a variety of other outdoor games and activities. They learn and practice diabetes management techniques that will help them improve their diabetes management plans and lead more active lives long after their camp experience.

Camp Freedom - Nature

About this camp

Camp Freedom - Nature provides children living with diabetes with an opportunity to form long lasting friendships, and the support and reassurance they need in knowing that they are not the only ones living with diabetes. Camp Freedom - Nature is a week long day camp that introduces campers to the Valley’s unique natural habitat through fun and interactive learning experiences.

Because diabetes in children impacts the entire family this day camp also includes siblings, so they can learn how to support their brother or sister living with the disease. Children ages 7 to 14 participate as campers, while high school age youth are invited to apply for a Junior Counselor position. Adults age 18 or older are invited to apply as Counselors or for other adult volunteer roles. Health professionals, educators, and parents of children with diabetes provide staff supervision throughout the camp program.
